Built in 1881 by Baltimore, Ohio, resident and school teacher, James Buchanan, the Hanaway Covered Bridge still spans Clear Creek in its original location in Madison Township just off of Clearport Road. Although bypassed in the 1990s, Hanaway sits on its original sandstone abutments. The 85-foot long historic bridge is unique among Fairfield County's remaining covered bridges because it has a canopy on only one side. Since the Hanaway Covered Bridge was constructed on a curve, this single canopy allowed those entering the bridge to watch for traffic approaching from the other direction and safely exit the bridge.
The Hanaway Covered Bridge is part of Two Glaciers Park, which is currently under development. The public is welcome to visit the park's two historic covered bridges: the Hanaway and the Johnston. Parking and green space is available at the Johnson Covered Bridge. There is no public access to the Hanaway Covered Bridge and visitors are advised to use caution while driving past this historic structure.
